Arts Exhibitions

The largest portion of the Gallery houses an astonishing variety of art works which include paintings (oil, gouache, water colour and mixed media), sculptures {wood, fibre glass, bronze}, ceramics and bead works such as shoes, walking sticks etc.

Occupying a vantage position are a set of gbedu drums (six in number) welcoming visitors to the Gallery. All these, regularly displayed for public consumption, fall on the lap of this unit which also runs arts and cultural related activities.

Pracical Studio
AMG is the only gallery in Nigeria today which undertakes portrait paintings on animal skin.

Its two Resident Artists are also the only artists in the country working in the medium. To meet the demand of its patrons and customers who constantly commission the painting medium, a practical studio where such works are executed was established and it has since remained vibrant and functioning.

The Skin Medium
Animal skin arguably complements the significance of Drums to AMG. But in Ethiopia, Lemma Guya, an ethiopian contemporary artist of repute has succeeded in exploring the positive responsiveness of the animal skin to oil paint. He surged to become the initiator of the painting medium which he evolved after his disengagement from the military.

Portrait painting on animal skin, peculiar to the family like carvings of the Fakeyes, soon become his signature and before long, four of his children have been baptised into the profession. In 1992, Mufu Onifade, a Nigerian, was initiated into the artistic fraternity through a rigorous training in the art. Today, he is the first and perhaps the only Nigerian working in that medium.

With a brotherly collaboration between him and Dawit Lemma (one of Lemma Guya's trained children), AMG is armed with two formidable Resident Artists who relentlessly satisfy the yearnings of the patrons in the area of paintings on animal skin.
