FEMI KUTI IN DETROIT

June 2001

The Yoruba have a saying which when loosely translated into English says "you must watch the lead horse before you decide how fast to run?."

After seeing Femi in concert for the first time, it is clear to us that he spent a lot of time watching his father and honing his skills before breaking out on his own because the results are just grand.

It was a beautiful Friday evening in the Motor City. Femi came on to the stage in his bare feet and greeted the already excited crowd. Afterall, this was not his first time through Detroit. He caressed his precious saxophone, and then for approximately 90 minutes thrilled the audience with music from his Shoki Shoki album.

Dancers
Led by a drummer as steady as Tony Allen was for his father, Femi's rhythm section set the pace and the rest of the band followed tightly.

And the dancers?....what a show!!

We do not mean to compare Femi to Fela. He definetly has his OWN sound. But he made us all happy when during his encore, he grooved easily into "Water, e no get enemy". It made the evening complete and sent us all home smiling.
