Montana and Girl Friend

Montana and Girl Friend

When they formed their group, The Remedies in 1997, neither Tony, Idris nor Eddy could have envisaged the kind of future providence had in store for them.

A little more than a group of three aspiring young men who were searching for a way to make their impact felt in the world and probably make some money in the process, the trio pooled resources together and soon managed to release two songs into the market.

Judile and Sakomo were the two songs. And overnight, these two songs launched the trio into national stardom.

The success of their efforts was so great that the songs became a part of the National pscyche and only songs on the lips of both young and old for a very long time were either Judile or Sakomo.

And so from such humble beginning, the group went ahead to rule the airwaves and burst all musical charts in the country. They were the favourites at every party, nightclub, shows, concerts and the like. From nobodies, the adventurous trio had managed to stamp their tune in the sands of fame and posterity.

But as a group, they were obviously not destined to last together.

For even before the ovations, fame and national recognition they were receiving had reached a crescendo, their individual differences had interfered to make mince meat of what had appeared like their global excellence.

Before the uninitiated in the hinterlands could fully settle down to identify with them, the group had split.

Many could not believe their eyes and ears when they heard, saw and read the news. Their favourite group and kings of the new hip hop had actually broken up. Not a few sad faces shed tears at what they considered the demise of a promising group and all the 'goodies' songs they had in stock.

However, to the pleasant surprise of quite a few people, rather than be a huge loss to the country's blossoming rap / hip hop culture, the break-up of the trio turned out to be more of a blessing.

Rather than fading out, the group actually turned into two quite strong groups.

The first which had two of the original members, Idris and Eddy, retained the Remedies name while the other act, the original third member of the former Remedies, Tony, simply became Tony Tetuila. He soon teamed up with another budding but highly successful hip hop group, the Plantashun Boyz.

Both new groups were quite successful. The Remedies released an album, Jealousy in 1999. With such hit tunes like Shade and the title track, Jealousy, they again confirmed themselves as bonafide lords of Nigeria's version of traditionally flavored hip hop and rap.

They have since followed up this feat with their recent collaboration with upcoming juju musician, Wale Thompson playing along on the hit tune, Friday Night.

Former Remedies man, Tony Tetuila too has been keeping the groove coming.

His first album as a solo artist was called Morning Time. An eight track trail blazer of an album,

Morning Time filled halls and concert venues whenever Tony was invited to play. Like the title track, Morning Time, other danceable and highly successful songs in the album included Omode Meta and Ogogoro. All have since become national anthems of the young and old alike as they draw audiences to the dance floor like magnets each time they are played.
