Revisiting El-Rufai’s Hypocrisy And Horrendous Legacies
Author: Jide Ayobolu | November 15, 2007
There is no doubt whatsoever that funky Mallam Nasir El-Rufai; the immediate past minister of the federal capital territory was indeed a power drunk element. He was so besotted with power that he instantaneously became a bull- in –China-shop.

He was a sanctimonious wog, who preaches what he does not believe in. As soon as he was made the F.C.T minister; he started making noise all over the place about the exigent need to restore the master plan of Abuja. In the process several houses of the poor and downtrodden were mercilessly pulled down without any iota of human and humane consideration and feelings.

El-Rufai carried on as if he was doing a national duty. But this is not true after all, rather he pursued a personal and vested agenda of dubious land deals and became a willing tool in the hands of Obasanjo to deal viciously with perceived political enemies or foes to score cheap political advantage as well as make land in Abuja the exclusive preserve of a few privilege kleptocrats in the corridors of power.

He atrociously sent many innocent and innocuous people to their early graves. He made many people live in anguish and dislocated several other helpless and hapless thousands, and the deleterious effects of all this, are so manifest today in Abuja, as shown in the increase in the rate of armed robbery activity in the F.C.T., and upsurge in the prices of house.

To him power is might. He has forgotten that power is ephemeral and transient. Where is he today? Can he freely work the street of Abuja without police escort? If he had done very well, why will he continue to live in hiding and isolation? He has been forgotten except for the horrendous legacies he left behind.

When he was in power he played God, turned against those that have assisted him in life and became an ingrate. He was not grateful to God that gave him the opportunity to serve the country, he was not considerate to Nigerians he purported claimed to serve and he behaved as if the people were at his mercy but they have actually outlived him.

In spite of all the demolition exercises and the razzmatazz that people built their houses in areas designated as “green areas”, he actually corruptly re-awarded plots of land to cronies and surrogates in the same “green areas” where he had severally demolished houses.

Under him demolition of houses was big business, with his cronies serving as the conduit pipes for making cheap millions from government lean purse. Is this not corruption and treachery of the highest order? If President Umaru Yar’Adua had not recently revoked El-Rufai’s ‘Greek gift’ of plots of land in “green areas”, one would not have known that the diminutive figure called El-Rufai was just acting a drama when he was in office.

And, wherever, he is now, he would surely bury his head in shame. But the pains, he inflicted on the poor will not go unpunished by God. God will punish him here and if he does not repent and ask for forgiveness, in the hereafter. El-Rufai is a sadist, emotionally unstable, arrogant and meretricious.

It would be recalled that at a point, the immediate past House of Representatives passed a resolution that he was unfit to hold public office in Nigeria again. It would also be recalled that, when he was in BPE, he unilaterally decided to be paying some female youth corp members in dollars.

This is a man that can do just anything to get and retain political power. And, when he gets it, he misuses it. He is not level-headed; he has no honour, integrity, credibility and self-worth. No wonder therefore that the house he built with spittle is falling apart like a park of cards.

He has no self-control; he is a loose-cannon, constantly acting on the spur-of-the-moment prodding without deep reasoning. So, all the braggadocios of the days of yore are just mere histrionics and theatrics. He has forgotten that those who fail to learn from history will sooner than later themselves, become part and parcel of the relics of history.

The essence of public service is to serve people with the fear of God and make their lives more meaningful, rewarding and eventful. It is instead a selfless service to galvanize the country to greater heights and make Nigeria an El-dorado land of hope and glory.

It is not to use exalted offices to corruptly enrich oneself or group of friends. Undoubtedly, El-Rufai is a national disgrace and may the country never have the misfortune of having his like as a public office holder again, Amen.
