The face-off between the joint military task force (JTF) and militants in the Niger Delta has been going on for five days now and an unspecified number of people, including a pregnant woman have been killed.
About 20,000 people are said to be trapped in the fighting and about 65 people are reported dead and over 100 people injured.
Reports say that the JTF has mobilised two Nigerian Air Force bombers and 15 gunboats to continue the fight against suspected militants in the Niger Delta
Sources say that the presidency had ordered that Chief Ekpomukpolo, aka Tompolo a militant leader, and his lieutenants should be apprehended dead or alive after they allegedly killed 12 soldiers.
The JTF resumed the bombardment of Oporoza, Ubefan, Okerenkoko, Kurutie, Azama, Benikurukuru and other Gbaramatu-Ijaw communities in Delta State with helicopter gunships and about 30,000 people are trapped in the forests.
