Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Health has reported the first swine flu-related death in Nigeria. The ministry also warned to be wary of the H1N1 Influenza virus, also known as Swine flu.
In a statement the Minister of Health, Babatunde Osotimehin, said a 38-year-old woman from Bayelsa State resident in Lagos tested positive after returning from a trip to the US about three months ago. She reportedly fell sick about six weeks ago and died on January 5 in Lagos.
He also said as of January 18, 2010, Nigeria had recorded 11 laboratory confirmed cases of the H1N1 Influenza virus.
The minister also advised people with symptoms to go for check-up immediately. Swine flu syptomes are flu-like with coughing, lack of appetite, fever, running nose, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, etc
Increased surveillance for the disease including searches for active cases in some designated health centres in all the states and the FCT is currently ongoing.
