Christy Essien-Igbokwe, who played Apena, wife of Jegede Sokoya in “The New Masquerade”, is dead

Christy Essien-Igbokwe, a popular Nigerian musician,, has died aged 50. Sources say sshe fell ill three days ago and died on Thursday, June 30 at a private hospital in Lagos. Christy Essien-Igbokwe was popularly known as Nigeriaâs âLady of Songsâ, and will also be remembered for her role as Apena, the wife of Jegede Shokoya in âThe New Masqueradeâ. She started singing while in secondary school and released her first album, Freedom, in 1976 at the age of 16. She also released other albums including âPatienceâ, âGive me a Chanceâ, âTime Waits for no Oneâ and âHear the Call" and had hit songs like âOmo Mi Seun Rereâ, âHear the Callâ and âTete Nu Na Ulaâ. The multi-talented singer could also speak several Nigerian languages -Yoruba, Igbo and her native Ibibio, and released songs in various Nigerian languages. She was a founding member of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, and was its first female president. She received the International Special Achievement Award, Mexico in 1983 and the Africa Music Mother Award World Song Festival Award in 1984. In 2002, she received a National Honours Award (MFR) in Nigeria. She is survived by her husband and four sons.
