We will not rest until these terrorists are wiped out - Nigeria's President reacts to Kano attacks
| January 23, 2012
President Goodluck Jonathan visited Kano state on Sunday to assess the damage caused by the bombing and shooting attacks in Kano state on Friday. The Islamic sect, Boko Haram, had carried out a brazen attack on police stations and neighborhoods in Kano on Friday. The group launched a co-ordinated series of bomb blasts and shooting sprees targeting government buildings, including police stations, the police headquarters and immigration offices. The scale of the killing and destruction makes the deadliest strike claimed by Boko Haram , with hundreds of people suspected to have been killed. A doctor in Kano's Murtala Mohammed hospital said, "We have 178 people killed in the two main hospitals. There could be more, because some bodies have not yet come in and others were collected early." The President toured the city and saw the devastation and visited hospitals where he comforted the injured. He also visted the palace of the Emir of Kano, where he promised to wipe out Boko Haram saying, âThose who perpetrate this dastardly act are not spirit, they live freely with us in the society and the security challenges they pose have now made it incumbent on us to be extra vigilant on what our next door neighbor does and by so doing, we will overcome the evil forces. I seek the cooperation of all towards getting those involved in the havoc arrested. I assure Nigerians that the government will intensify its security in Kano and all over the country to unravel the misery behind this act." âWhat is good for us as a nation is to look at our neighbours, to know what they do to enable us fish out these miscreants because if we donât, one day, it may be against us. We will not rest, until these terrorists are wiped out.â âNigerians should do everything possible to make sure that miscreants in our midst are immediately reported to security agents. It is the responsibility of all Nigerians to fight militancy. Any dangerous attack on any community is an attack on Nigerians. In some years back, none of us will believe that Nigeria will be involved in suicide bombing mission.â While meeting with the President, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, shed tears as he spoke about the destruction and lives lost in the attacks. The emir thanked President Jonathan for his vist and pointed out that Kano state is under-policed and asked the president to beef up security in the city. He said, âIt is a far cry that a city of kanoâs size and status is being policed by 8,000 men, and we appeal to the authority concerned to have a rethink on the current situation in the overall peace and stability of the stateâ, He also described the attacks as "ugly and violentâ and said that the emirate will pray for the people of Kano.
