The President of Ghana, John Fifi Attah Mills, died on Tuesday, July 24th, a few hours after announcing to Parliament that he was leaving for Nigeria. He died in a military hospital in Accra, Ghana and this is the first time that a president has died while in office in Ghana.
A statement from the President’s office said the President died a few hours after falling ill and added “It is with heavy heart that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the President of the Republic of Ghana." and no further details were given. Reports said the President died of throat cancer and an aide said that the President had complained of pains on Monday night and died on Tuesday afternoon after his condition worsened.
He had also just returned from a “routine medical check-up” in the United States last month.
President Atta Mills' health has always been speculated on in Ghana, even before he took office in 2009. His illness was never officially confirmed and the President had always insisted that he was doing fine.
Mr Atta Mills was vice-president to former Ghanaian military ruler, Jerry Rawlings, between 1997 and January 2001 and became President after winning the elections in December 2008.
The Vice President, John Dramani Mahama, has been sworn in as Ghana's new President and he has pledged to uphold stability in Ghana and govern for all Ghanaians. Taking the oath at an emergency parliamentary session, he said, "I wish Ghanaians to be assured that all is well. We are going to maintain the peace, unity and stability that Ghana is noted for."
The new President has declared a week of national mourning and the opposition presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NNP), Nana Akufo-Addo, has suspended campaigning out of respect for Mr Atta Mills.
Mr Mahama is to serve as president until the next election, but it is not clear if he will be the candidate his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in the next election.

Heaven is still the best place to live, where u will die no more. Where president will never live his seat to mr so call death that’s the reason why the bible make every things clear to us at Mathew 6 vs. 33… “but seek u first the kingdom of god and his righteousness and every other thing shall be added to us all”.
