Lesbians banned from playing for the Nigerian national team.
| March 08, 2013
In a speech at the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) recent annual general assembly, Dilichukwu Onyedinma, chair of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), got the attention of the international media and FIFA when she made coments about lesbians playing female football in Nigeria. This hs resulted in FIFA sending a preliminary inquiry to the Nigerian Football Association. Onyedinma was quoted by media sources as saying, "Any player that we find that is associated with lesbianism will be disqualified. We will call the club chairmen to control their players and such players will not be able to play for the national team." "Lesbianism is happening but we have to talk to the clubs and look inside the clubs, and these things have to do with clubs. There are particular clubs that don't even want to hear about it and once they hear it, the players involved will be sacked." Gay rights groups including the Federation of Gay Games, the European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation, Football v Homophobia and AllOut said they had written to FIFA president Sepp Blatter about the alleged ban. Homosexuality is currently illegal and taboo in Nigeria and Nigeria's National Assembly recently passed a same-sex marriage prohibition bill to outlaw same-sex marriages in the country.

Nothing seems to surprise me anymore about our country Nigeria. Of all our problems, the gay issue is what we want to embark upon and face the condemnation of the international community. Soccer is a global sport and Ms. Onyedinma thinks that women's soccer in Nigeria can exist in a vacuum. We truly lack leaders with vision and knowledge of the world we live in.
