In a recent announcement, the U.S Dept. of state stated that natives of Nigeria are no longer eligible to participate in the U.S Visa lottery program. The U.S Visa lottery program allows citizens of countries with historically low rates of immigration to the United States to apply to become residents of the USA.
Citizens of Nigeria and some other countries have been eligible to participate in the program for some years but for 2015, natives of Nigeria are no longer eligible to participate in the program because more than 50,000 Nigerians have immigrated to the United States in the last five years.
Natives of Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (mainland -born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam are also not eligible to participate in the program.
There are two ways that natives of Nigeria might be able to qualify - 1) If they are married to someone that was born in a country whose natives are eligible to participate, then the Nigerian can claim his/her spouses country of birth 2) If neither of the Nigerian native's parents was born or
legally resident in Nigerian at the time of his/her birth then the Nigerian can claim one of his/her parents' countries of birth as long as it is a country whose natives are eligible to participate.
The 2015 Visa Lottery program will run between Tuesday, October 1, 2013, and Saturday, November 2, 2013. Entries must be submitted electronically at www.dvlottery.state.gov
