Nigeria's U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets, receive N2m each and national honours from President Jonathan
| November 11, 2013
Players, handlers and key members of Nigeria's Under-17 team, the Golden Eaglets, which won the 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Soccer Championship on Friday in Abu Dhabi, United Emirates received cash gifts and national honours from President Goodluck Jonathan at a reception held in honour of the players at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The President announced a cash reward of N2 million for each of the teamís 19 players, N3 million to the head coach, Manu Garba, and N2.5 million each to the two assistant coaches, Nduka Ugbade and Emmanuel Amunike. The teamís doctor, physiotherapist, secretary, and the Chief Technical Officer received N500,000 each and the team coordinator, media officer and curator received N300,000 each. President Jonathan said the gifts were meant to keep his earlier promise to the team when he charged them conquer the world at the 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Soccer Championship and added that with winning five major tournaments in the last two years, Nigeria has recorded major milestones in sports history. He also said, ĒThe victory of the Eaglets was for the whole of Africa and the beginning of the revival in the nationís sports sector." The President attributed the success to the proactive measures and actions taken by his administration after the countryís disappointing performance at the 2012 London Olympics. President Jonathan also announced that the players, handlers, coaches and officials including some key members of the Nigerian Supporters Club and the Nigerian Football Federation will all be rewarded with national honours during the National Awards ceremonies Ē The Minister of Sports also spoke at the event and said, "The victorious Golden Eaglets team is not just a team but a project and their winning will not be the end but a beginning of greater victory for the nation." He also said that the successes recorded so far in the sports sector in the last two years makes President Jonathan the most successful President in Nigeria's sports history.
