Amaka Igwe, Nollywood producer and film-maker is dead

Amaka Igwe, one of Nigeria’s foremost film producers, writer, director and a leading player in Nigeria's entertainment industry, has died. Reports say she had Amaka had gone to Enugu with her husband to prepare for a new Igbo soap opera and suffered an asthma attack. She was rushed to a hospital but died on the way. Amaka was an accomplished writer, producer, director, entrepreneur and teacher. She was one of the pioneers of modern Nigerian TV drama and film and she gained national attention when as the writer and producer ‘Checkmate’ an award-winning TV soap in Nigeria and ‘Fuji House of Commotion" its offshoot. She also produced and directed two critically-acclaimed movies in the early days of Nollywood - RattleSnake and Violated. She founded Amaka Igwe Studios, BoBTV Expo, Top Radio 90.9FM, and Q Entertainment Networks. She is survived by her husband of 21 years, three children, her mother, siblings and a large extended family.
