| June 08, 2014
Professor Dora Nkem Akunyili,, a former Minister of Information and Communication and former Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has passed away. She died in a hospital in India after battling ovarian cancer for a few months. The news of her death was announced by Peter Obi, the ex--governor of Anambra State. He said, âOn behalf of the Akunyili family, I wish to officially confirm the death of Prof. (Mrs.) Dora Nkem Akunyili, OFR, in a Specialist Cancer Hospital in India today at 10 am, Nigerian time, after a two-year battle with cancer. In spite her illness, Prof. Akunyili was unwavering in her belief in a better Nigeria. That was why she defied her condition and was part of Anambra State Handover Committee and the National Conference.â âThe last time I visited her in India, even when she needed prayers herself, she was full of concern for the abducted Chibok girls, the security situation in Nigeria and other challenges facing the country and told me that she remained prayerful for the release of the girls and that God would help President Goodluck Jonathan to overcome all the challenges facing the nation. âShe asked all Nigerians to remain prayerful and committed to building a better society for our children. We all prayed together and I promised to be visiting her every month. We thank all those who remained fervent in prayers for her recovery and urge them to remain prayerful for the peaceful repose of her soul.â Rumours of her being sick had been circulating for a while and when she appeared at the National Conference, she looked frail and anxiety about her condition increased. Prof. Dora Akinyuli was born in Makurdi, Benue State on July 14, 1954 to Chief and Mrs Paul Young Edemobi. She had six children and three grandchildren. She rose to prominence in Nigeria when she was appointed the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and launched a fight against counterfeit drugs in Nigeria. She reportedly received multiple death threats after she imposed stringent conditions on the sale an distribution of drugs in Nigeria and shut down major markets in the country. She was also the Federal Minister of Information and Communication in President Yaradua's government. she was appointed the Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, Akunyiliâs unbounded energy was released as she fought tooth and nail with Nigeriaâs notorious cartels of fake drugs. She was later to become minister of information under the President Musa YarâAdua. She also contested in the Anambra Central Senatorial election in 2011.

Mrs Dora Akunyili was an embodiment of beauty, intelligence, hardwork, among others. Her life was short but well lived. We shall miss her. May her soul rest in peace, amen.
