Cameroon closes borders and suspends flights to Nigeria
| August 20, 2014
The government of Cameroon has ordered the closure of all its borders and has suspended all flights to and from Nigeria to curb the spreading of the deadly virus Ebola into the country. Cameroon shares a border boundary of 2,000 km with Nigeria in Borno, Adamawa, Taraba , and the Cross River states in the South-South sub-region. A spokesman for the Cameroon Foreign Affairs ministry said the decision became necessary due to the fear of Ebola, which is currently threatening the West African region. Speaking at a special program of the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) the spokesperson said, âThis decision on border closure and suspension of all flights to and from Nigeria is to protect the lives of Cameroonian citizens living within and outside from contracting Ebola, as Nigeria, our main trading partner in Africa had been facing since July 20, 2014 when Patrick Sawyer sneaked into the country aboard a flight with the deadly virus,â He later noted that the border closure and flight suspension should last no longer than a month, or as soon as Nigeria has contained the virus. The border outposts in Borno that are affected include Kirawa, Duji, Mallam Fatori, Banki, Damba/Masara, Baga, Danbaure, Gamboru, Sigal and Jibe, 145 km northeast of Maidugri.
