Nigerian Disapora will not be voting in the 2015 elections in Nigeria - INEC
| August 20, 2014
Speaking at a public hearing of the House of Representative Committee on Electoral Matters, the INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, said that voting by the Nigerian Diaspora should be allowed but itâs practically impossible for it to happen by next year as the commission does not have the capabilities to handle it next year. He recommended that the Electroal Act should be amended before the 2015 elections to allow for Diaspora voting in future elections. The INEC chairman said, âThe issue of electronic voting should also be accommodated before the 2015 elections, but we cannot conduct elections electronically next year. It will be for future elections." He also recommended for an extension of the seven-day election to 21 days for a run-off election, saying âit is technically impossible to do a run-off in seven days.â Professor Jega also requested for an extension of the days to accommodate the transfer of voters, from the approved 45 to 60 days, despite the Electoral Act of 2010 providing 35 days. He also said that an amendment to Section 25 of the Electoral Act, 2010, which provides for by-election whenever there is vacancy in a position, would be appropriate so that all by-elections would be done twice every year instead of just once a year. INEC also expressed support for the amendment to Section 29 (8) of the Electoral Act, 2010 for the deployment of Nigerian Armed Forces only for securing the delivery and distribution of election materials.

I agree fully with Jega. Nigeria is not yet ripe for Diaspora voting. When did we truly census Nigeria in Diaspora, and who guarantees that their votes will be free and manipulated. How do you ensure that their election are fairly covered and monitored, when we have it in history that most of election rigging in Nigeria are done in remote areas out of the reach of Election Observers.

Thank you Jega for CLOSING THAT WINDOW WHICH PDP INTENDS TO USE TO RIG 2015 ELECTION!!!! ANY ONE OF THEM INTRESTED IN VOTING IN 2015 SHOULD COME BACK HOME!!!!
