Bank Verification Number, BVN, registration for Nigerians in the Diaspora extended to June 30, 2016
| February 15, 2016

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has extended the Bank Verification Number, BVN, registration exercise for Nigerians in Diaspora to June 30, 2016. CBN said that the decision to extent the registration period for the Diaspora was due to the  low percentage of registration of banks customers in the Diaspora, which may have been due to the lack of accessibility of registration centres and unavailability of registration centres in some cities where the population of Nigerians is high.

On February 14, 2014, CBN launched the Bank Verification Number (BVN) as part of their efforts to ensure that Customer Bank Accounts are verified and are protected from unauthorized access, etc .

BVN is a unique number for customers of the banks in Nigeria that is linked to the biometric details of the customer. This biometric details include finger print of all ten (10) fingers of a person and his/her picture. Bank customers in Nigeria have to get their BVN to prevent access to their account being limited.

Last November, CBN extended the BVN enrolment timeline for Nigerians in the Diaspora to January 31, 2016 and has now extended it again.
