Enugu State is an inland state in southeastern Nigeria. Its capital is Enugu where the state derives its name.Enugu state was created in 1991 from the old Anambra State.

History

The name Enugu State was introduced on August 27, 1991 with the creation of Anambra State. Enugu State with its capital in Enugu is what was formerly known as Anambra North.

It shares boundaries with Anambra on the West, Abia State on the South, Kogi on the North while Benue and Eboyin on the East. Enugu and Nsukka are its major towns. Enugu was the headquarters of the former East Central State and Eastern Nigeria.

The state is made up of 17 local government councils including Awga, Ezeagu, Isi-Uzo, Nsukka, Udenu, Aniri, Oji River among others.

The state has such educational institutions as Enugu State University, University of Nigeria, Nuskka and Enugu Campus, Institute of Management & Technology, Enugu and others. It has some theological institutions such as the Bigard Memorial Seminary, Enugu and the Spiritan Theological Institute, Nsukka. It is noted for its coal deposits.

Agriculture
 

The state is predominantly agricultural with yam tubers, palm produce and rice being their main produce. There is in place an agricultural policy aimed at maximizing its agricultural potentials.

Mineral Resources

Besides coal, new mineral deposits have recently been discovered in Enugu State. These include limestone, iron ore, crude oil, natural gas and bauxite.

Education

Apart from primary and post-primary schools, there exists a number of institutions of higher learning. These are the University of Nigeria Nsukka which is a federal government institution, the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu; College of Education Eha-Amufu and College of Agriculture, Ikwo. There is also a privately owned University Called Caritas University-Enugu.
