The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, will today at the Eid Prayer Ground in the ancient city of Kano launch "Sharia" the Islamic legal system.

This decision to adopt the Islamic legal system was reached after a long time demand by the people of the state. There have been opposition from the Christian and Southerners in the State, to the introduction of the Sharia legal code following the out break of violence three months ago in the city of Kaduna, between Muslims who were asking for the adoption of Sharia and Christians.

It will be recalled that several lives were lost and properties valued at Millions of Naira were destroyed in the city. The resultant effect of the Kaduna civil disturbance led to the spread of violence to the Eastern Part of Nigeria where the Ibos retaliated over killing of their kin in the Northern part of the country.

Sharia was first introduced in Nigeria late last year (October 1999) by the Governor of Zamfara State. Alhaji Ahmed Sani Yerima.

The adoption of Sharia in the Northern part of the country has caused exodus from the area. Most Christains and Southerners in the Northern parts of Nigeria, where this Islamic legal code is being applied are vacating in large numbers.

Not too long ago a cow thief in Zamfara state - Mallam Buba Bello Garke Jangebe, became the first to fall to the axe of Sharia, his hand was chopped of.

With this development, sales of alcohol in Kano will henceforth be prohibited. Commercial sex workers (prostitutes) in the city are now knocked out of business. Soldiers in barracks in the accient city of Kano have opposed Sharia being extended to their domain.
