What defines success?

Is it by the amount of money one has or assets acquired ? Or the position one holds in his or her office? Is it by the amount of people that are scared of you or suck up to you ? Really, how does one rate success?

Image: Ballons Some people feel very successful because they own a large mass of earthly wealth and other people envy them and hope to be as successful as them. But what they don't realise is that, all the possesions do not count as success, not complete success at least.

Complete success is being at peace with whoever you are and whatever you have. This is not as simple as it read though.

There are a lot of very wealthy people who feel very empty. Surely they cannot be called successful because true success gives you a feeling of completeness and contentment not emptiness. So, the amount of material wealth you have isn't the criteria to grade success. What then is the crieria you may ask? I'll tell you.

Personally, I think, success is;

  • When you have learnt to balance your physical needs and spiritual needs;
  • When you have learnt to feed them both accordingly;
  • When you eventually get the feeling of contentment and fulfilment,
because no matter how rich you are, money can only give you material contentment, not emotional or spiritual security.

So money in itself can never be a criteria for success.

Inner contentment, and fulfilment therefore becomes the criteria for true success. For only then can you say you are truly successful. You can attest to this.

Come to think of it how come the rich have hypertension, and build very high walls around their homes? Is it not because they lack a feeling of security? You can answer that.

How come they ride in cars with tinted glasses? Instincts can answer for us.

You would agree with me that contentment, inner peace, and fulfilment remain the criteria for judging success.
