FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Teaneck, New Jersey, June 9th. 2001

In response to the call for Nigerians to come together to effectively participate in making a difference for the better in their motherland, Nigerians from across the world converged on Teaneck, New Jersey, in the United States on Saturday June 2nd, 2001 to inaugurate the Nigeria National Democratic Forum.

The organization which came into being as a result of months of dialogue and deliberations across the oceans and on the internet, attracted many Nigerians, professionals and all, from across the continents of the world. Within the first few weeks of its birth, the group counted among its membership, Nigerians in far away places as South Africa, England, Israel, Japan, Canada and across the United States.

The membership of the organization is not limited to those in the diaspora alone as people also came together from places like Port-Hacourt, Abuja and Lagos in response to the clarion call for a pan-Nigerian movement with a committed sense of national duty for ending our current national malaise.

At its inaugural meeting last Saturday, the group adopted a working document and bylaws and deliberated on proposals for its activities and engagement in Nigerian politics. The central theme of the organization is simply to nurture and promote the interest of all Nigerians for the benefit of all Nigerians. The organization which meets next in Washington DC will put into place policy guidelines on participating in Nigerian politics and discuss its formal launching in the United States, Britain and Nigeria by early Spring. The immediate priority of the organization is to engage in the political education of the Nigerian citizenry so that they can recognize their responsibilities and the obligations of their elected representatives.

The organization promises to change the style of leadership in Nigeria. It will nurture and promote responsible, accountable and effective leadership in Nigeria. And also end, through effective recruitment and support of candidates and policy ideas, corrupt and inept leadership that has characterized the Nigerian political landscape since its independence. This organization, according to participants at the inaugural meeting, "will promote nothing but the interest of the people in response to the general will of every Nigerian. The wanton disregard for the will of the people will soon come to an end and the rekindling of our national will and spirit is at hand. This is the personal contract that NNDF will bring to our body politics".
