I read a story in one of the Nigerian newspapers about the recent launching of Shagari's book, which caught my attention (again) on how we misuse the word donation in Nigeria.
That Alhaji Shehu Shagari wrote a book is a good thing, but why do state governments have to make "donations" of the people's money to this private venture?
Here we go:
"Beckoned to Serve," a book by Shehu Shagari, was launched recently in Nigeria: That's good!
Donations were made by various State Governors at the ceremony: That's bad!
This is an abuse of power & misuse of state funds which we seem to overlook in Nigeria, aka: "That's how we always do it syndrome".
What business do State Governors have in "donating" state funds to the launching of a private book?
What benefit do the people of Lagos State, for example, get when their government donated N500,000 to Shehu Shagari's book launch?
What about the N8.6 million donated by the House of Representatives.
Ain't we misusing this word - Donation?
- Whose money is it anyway?
- Who approves giving away State Funds as donations for such non-public purposes?
We have a long way to go, indeed.
