    Roots

    Submitted By: Arukaino Umukoro

    Fed by the succulent breasts of Queen Amina
    Weaned on the meat of the antelopes in Kenya
    Nurtured by the strong hands of Kunta Kinte.
    I am a descendant of the tribe of ageless warriors.
    Shaka Zulu, King Jaja , Mandela, I greet you.

    My skin is as rich as Humus,
    As priceless as the minerals on our lands.
    I possess the strength of a wild zebra
    Untamed by the whips of our colonial masters.

    The blood of my ancestors flow in the rivers
    Of the Congo, Zambezi, Nile and the Niger.
    I traversed the labyrinth of our myths
    To understand the diversities and meanings

    And on the lofty heights of Kilimanjaro,
    With the searching eyes of our chronicles,
    I discovered the depths of my roots;
    I am the proud son of Mother Africa.
