Chapter 2 - Bisola Moves In
previous chapter | next chapter
I heard some voices ouside our door.
"Ah, that sounds like 'Bisola" I thought to myself. Just as I decided to check it out, someone knocked on the door
"Yes?, come in!" Tope answered.
"Please, we are looking for Oyin" an elderly woman answered from outside, I got up from my bed and answered the door. It was Bisola's mum.
"E ka san ma ( Good afternoon ma)" I said.
"Oyinda ba wo ni? (Oyinda, how are you?)".
"E wole ma ( come inside ma)" I said.
"Please help me to bring this things in, Bisola has gone to bring more of her load".
I carried the large travelling bags into the room, my room-mates echoed their greetings. I asked her to sit down while I went to help Bisola bring her things up.
Bisola's mum waited for us to unpack, which didn't last long because I'd already created some space for her things. I advised her to send clothes back since we were almost the same size we could wear each others clothes. She heeded my advice, most of her clothes were too dowdy for my liking and I guessed she must have thought so too.
After we finished unpacking, we saw her mum off. Then she introduced herself to others.
Between the two of us we had food stuffs and Provs (provision) that could last us 8 weeks.
Bisola settled in fast, and we lay on the bed gisting and laughing.
By the end of the day, all my room-mates had moved in except for the one in Angel's Upper bunk.
Angel went to the registrar to get who was going to be her bunkie. She got the name to be Tolu Williams a year one Maths student. Angel was happy that her bunk mate was a jambite too.
My bunk mates were Debbie and Susan. Year 3 students reading philosophy.
They had lots of stuff. Their shoes filled a travelling bag. They also brought a CD player, fridge and lots of goodies.
Debbie confessed that she had a sweet tooth, she was Victoria's squatter.
Chichi moved in as well.
Lara, a year two student of Zoology moved in, her bunkie Biodun came not long after her.
By 7.p.m., the whole room was filled with girls getting acquainted.
Since I like analysing people, I decided to analyse them unnoticed. Although, the first impression is not always the right one, it is a lasting impression.
But, knowing that we'll all stay together at least 8 months, I guess I could check them out now and compare later.
Starting with Angel,
She's a pleasant and fun loving girl but the latter will get her into trouble because she can easily be influenced.
Vicky
One can see is a well brought up girl from well to do family but she'd like some action in her life.
Tope
Should go and read G and C (Guidance and Counselling). She seemed to know it all, she said as much that she's been there and seen all. This must have to do with her height, she's short you know but has a beautiful face. My mom has always told me to beware of short people because they're wanna bes. They think they'll be cheated because of their height so they try to make up for their height by being noticed and Tope didn't prove my mum wrong.
Lara
I noticed was absorbing everything and everyone. I think she's doing what I'm doing, analysing everybody, she looked like a no nonsense girl anyway.
Biodun
In law year one. Looks like someone that likes boys and parties because that was her main topic.
Debbie and Suzy looked okay, while ChiChi looked like she wasn't ready to settle down on campus.
I looked at all these people and I prayed to God to give me strength to cope with them and also be diplomatic in the way I handle them.
The next day was a Sunday. Most of us went to church except Lara who told us she was a Muslim. Bisola and I went to the Redeemed Christian Church of God at University Road. After coming back we cooked rice for lunch.

Later in the evening we sorted out the clothes for the week. So, that we won't be bothering about what to wear during the week.
On Monday, the whole bathroom was crowded because lots of girls had eight o'clock lectures.
The bathroom which was a small shower had to be shared by two people (friends) so they wouldn't have to wait their turn. This was because it was two rooms to a shower.
After showering, Bisola and I dressed up to go to the main campus. I wore a red handkerchief top which set off my fair completion on a blue aplic 3/4 jeans.
Science quadrangle was full of students, some gisting, some rushing down to the lecture theatres, while others were writing their time table.
I had written mine immediately I registered so I had no problem there and was also already acquainted with the whole faculty. My first lecture was FSC 109 (Faculty of Science) Mr. A. was our lecturer. He was funny and was good in lecturing, I understood his lecture very well.
After that I did another faculty course, the lecturer was also okay. I finished at 12.p.m. and since I didn't have any other lecture for that day, I decided to go to my room.
I was about to take a campus shuttle, when a guy accosted me.
"Hi cutie, my name is Dayo" he said. I ignored him completely and entered the bus, he got in with me and said" I will go wherever you go unless I get acquainted with you".
I had to smile.
I couldn't resist asking him...."Even to the end of the world?"
"Yeah, but, I hope it won't result to that, so please tell me your name"
My name is Oyindamola, but my friends call me Oyin"
"I will call you honey"
"Why?" I asked
"Is that not the meaning of Oyin?" he inquired, I replied affirmatively, he paid my bus-fare. I told him my room number and he told me his. He said he was in his final year and was reading Mass Comm.
Getting back to the room, I saw Angel and Lara in the room. They asked how my day went and I told them. I even told them about Dayo, Lara asked if he told me his surname, I said yes but I couldn't remember what it was.
"Is he tall, dark and has a baby look?" she asked
"Yes?" I answered.
"He bounces instead of walking?" she stated.
Yes? I answered
"His surname is Phillips!"
"Yes!! How did you know?" I asked
"You mean Dayo Phillips toasted you?. She suddenly burst into uncontrollable laughter.
"What's it now?" Angel and I asked, but she laughed even more.
By this time my curiosity was at its peak. "Please now?" I pleaded.
"Dayo Phillips is...." she collapsed into fresh laughter
"He's what now"
"Dayo Phillips is a year 2 student of Mass Comm. they yabbed him in the school mag. They said out of 90 girls he toasted, 70 told him to go away, 10 took his money and ja (ran away) while 5 told him they had boyfriends and the remaining told him they wanted friendship.
He's a joneser" she started laughing again.
"Why did he have to lie about his years? Angel inquired.
"To give him a better prospect in going out with you" she said.
She told me that they believe Jambites want old blood (Staylites). And if they tell us that they are final year students that the jambitoes will fall more for them.
When I told Bisola the story, she confirmed what Lara had said.
From that day Lara started staying with us in our corner. And since she was also in science, we started going for lectures at the same time. Through her and Bisola, I learnt the ropes.
By my second week on campus, I had blended well with the school system. Looking at me one could not guess that I was a jambite. And around this time lots of posters and leaflets flodded campus came out. "Jambites gig" the one done on campus "Jambite rave", "clubs" you name it. This was to welcome jambites into the system.
All these Raves and gigs were scheduled around the same time. Most of these raves takes place outside campus and I heard that for first semester almost every weekend will have a rave or something. On campus, weekends start from Wednesday to end on Sunday. To them, almost everyday is a ball.
Tolu Williams moved in this week, Men! the girl no go take na waffi babe. Parents are based in Port-Harcourt, she wore a see through blue blouse with her jeans, she's also got ass, I wondered why she had that load, to me it was too much.
Tolu moved in with 3 suitcases and a fridge. Her bed was also filled with stuffed animals (bears). She was just talking in waffi.
"My parents stay for Port-Harcourt, my uncle H.O.D of IRPM work me to Maths, na Maths I go read. I get one bobo for here, him name na Folu ..." she went on and on.
Thank God, she's Angel's bunkie. They fit each other. Tope was the only one really rapping with her.
Guess, who came today? None other than Dayo Phillips.
Tope answered the door and he told her he was asking after me. He was dressed in a baggy jeans and a YSL top. He entered and started reeling off lies. Eventually, I couldn't take it anymore.
"Dayo, stop lying to me!. Do you think I won't find out sooner or later".
He paused for some moments and when he talked I knew he had already had a lot of practice.
"I knew you were going to find out, but not now? I wanted you to like me. Honey, I would have told you".
"Don't Honey me", I said raising my voice"
"You lied to me, if not for Lara. I couldn't have known"
"Lara? Lara? Ah, You mean Lara Falade? She's here?"
"Yes, come and start going. I hate liars"
"Honey, I'm sorry"
"I'm not Honey"
"But that's your name" he persisted.
He was still cajoling me when the P.A system was switched on.
"All male visitors, it is 10 o'clock. Please leave. Tomorrow is another day for you to come. Do not hide in the toilet, do not hide in the bathroom. Come back and continue what you're doing tomorrow" one of the porters announced.
We all burst into laughter and Tope told me that was how they do.
