Our main research objective is to identify the African traditional theatre with specific reference to the Rivers State of Nigeria (peoples of the lower Niger Delta area of West Africa).

Our experience is taken directly form oral tradition, Oriental theatres, the Greek, as well as Theatre of the Absurd.

We are mostly interested in the analysis, documentation and productions in the following categories:

  • Mythical, legendary.
  • Communication through the supernatural, forms and functions.
  • Symbolic objects, costume and colours
  • Dramatic use of drums and musical as the speech of the performance
  • The use of episodic movements initiated by drums etc.
  • The use of plastic elements of mind, movement to
    enrich dance patterns.

The Owu-Amapu-Ti dance drama illuminates the distinguishing features of African myth, legend, process of deification, rites, their aesthetic, and atmospheric projection through the art of song , dance, visual arts, drum language and other forms of non-verbal theatre.

The Owu-Amapu-Ti dance drama gives vital information about supernatural belief-systems of the Riverine culture, its water-spirits and deities.
