KAIKAI's KORNER
KaiKai

KaiKai's Korner is a collection of Nigerian movie reviews based on my very subjective opinions. The review articles have little or no technical comments. They express views about movies from a layperson's perspective.

Expect comments on the viewability of a movie, for instance, will a movie put you to sleep after five minutes? Does the content provide intellectual stimulation, pure entertainment or cultural/social exposition?
Occassionally, expect (attempts at) criticism/praise on the production, direction and edition of a movie.

Enjoy the reviews and hopefully, some reviews will send you searching for the movie reviewed.

I am not a professional movie critic and have never studied film-making. However, I believe that the majority of the viewing audience is just the same. We want to be entertained with a certain level of quality that warrants the time and money we spend on a movie.

MY ARTICLES

  • Twenty-one hours and fifteen minutes - Just another
    detention story

It seems quite a number of people are ready to die at the station. Phrases like "you go kill me oh"; "I ready to die today, if you wan kill me"; and "una wan kill me?" were thrown around very freely.
  • Africa, Where Goest Thou?
    Thy children are dying
As our wardens parade through our ghettos
Drunk with oil, bellies distended with diamonds, pockets bulging with gold
  • Simplifying Aphrodite's Magic
Aphrodite received from her husband, Hephaestus, a girdle made of gold and magic and when she wore it she became even more irresistible than she already was. My girdle is made of glass beads from Broadway, New York and magic from my mind but the effect is the same. I feel good and it shows!
  • Third World Na Third World, a no tell you lie!
I never realized how similar the third world experience was until I moved to New York and found my non-African and non-Caribbean friends telling the same stories.
  • A Daughter's Perspective: An undefined stage in womanhood
She would ask me if I wanted dodo and I would of course respond in the affirmative,... Of course this was a trap. As soon as I'd say, "yes, I want dodo," she would then say "OK go and fry some for yourself." Ah! What kind of offer was that?
  • Femi Kuti Live In New York
He was coming back to New York to perform for FREE, no less. I couldn't miss this one. The air around me was filled with the smell of reefer. ....before they let us go, Femi and Positive Force dug into Fela Library and pulled out "Water, E No Get Enemy"
  • Ras Kimono In New York
I wasn't very excited at the invitation because I didn't know what to expect. All I could think of were songs from Kim's debut like "stop dat break dance a rumba stylee" and "gimme likkle sugar for me tea." Catchy tunes, I must admit and I can't deny that those songs were part of my groove equation in those days, but I just wasn't in the mood for that kind of "reggae."
  • Lagbaja In New York
The show was scheduled to start at 9:00p.m. - I don't think I need to tell you that at 9:00p.m. Lagbaja was not present on the stage, and the audience was just trickling in.
